The Endurance - Ships of the Polar Explorers The ship that was to be renamed Endurance was built originally for tourist cruises in the Arctic by a partnership between Lars Christensen a Norwegian ship owner and the Belgian Adrien de Gerlache leader of the Belgian Antarctic expedition in 1897-99 and called the Polaris. The Endurance the lost vessel of Antarctic explorer Sir Ernest Shackleton was found at the weekend at the bottom of the Weddell Sea.

Endurance was the three-masted barquentine in which Sir Ernest Shackleton and a crew of 27 men and one cat sailed for the Antarctic on the 19141917 Imperial Trans-Antarctic Expedition.
